I have been thinking along the same lines for weeks now. My impression is that many of the neo-cons and those thumping the table for war haven't really read or understood Arendt's points. My fear is that this drive to war is putting the United States fully on the path to its own authoritarian state. Sadly I'm pretty convinced Bush nor any of his advisors have read her work either. I spent years of my life studying the rise of fascism and its twin communism and it just feels too close to the bone when I read some of these demands from our psedu-potus and his apparatus. Adn don't let me get started on the freepers.
I wrote a piece, featured in 1's & 0's back before we could publish online, on this work Arendt did and how it related to the events of the first gulf war. I must find this piece it seems as though it would be even more interesting because of current events.
I recently made note of a Lakoff piece about Republicans & Democrats. I keep crossing paths with this man's words. I read Metaphors We Live By in college. It had a very substantial impact on me and my work in artificial intelligence.
One smartass writer's attempt to make hay out of porn & the dot com implosion. Banal.
Still though it does have a few insights into the life of porn actors. For example, bring your own prophylactics. Don't hold everyone on the set up because you don't like the brand or type of condom offered. Bring your own by gum!
Sounds like a class I would be sure to love.
Islamic theology confronts us with the spectacular absence of a gendered Godhead. A theology which reveals the divine through incarnation in a body also locates it in a gender, and inescapably passes judgement on the other sex. A theology which locates it in a book makes no judgement about gender; since books are unsexed. The divine remains divine, that is, genderless, even when expressed in a fully saving way on earth.
It is a biological norm in Homo sapiens that, in youth, that part of the penis known as the prepuce often runs to impressive lengths, frequently representing more than three-quarters of the length of the penis. This anatomical fact is not without its cultural or artistic consequences.
A 14-year-old Karpurthala City, India boy permanently lost part of his penis after three girls invited him to join them for sex and one of them bit off the end. Police said the young girls misunderstood the moves they'd seen on a porno film.
busily preparing for the arrival of the queen I realize in a flash what we are doing here. There is much work to be done. Excavations cover our little cyberspace. When will the queen arrive? Will she make use of our infrastructure? Do ants concern themselves with this self doubt? Is the queen ever non-plussed?
I have been asked to offer some comments on gender identity issues as these impact on Muslims living in post-traditional contexts in the West, and particularly as they affect people who have traded up to the Great Covenant of Islam after an upbringing in Judaism or Christianity.
Mr. Murad may have something of interest to say about boys and the work of Germaine Greer but to be honest I don't care. I take with grains of salt those who identify as Christians or Jews if they conjoin that with the truth or accuracy of their opinion. Mr. Murad has done that here and yet also had the temerity to say "trade-up?"
I wonder, does this religion come with an arrogance quotient?
I've been confident of this for years. Apparently I was confused by being so confident, unaware there was a debate, and in the end absolutely correct.
That fits me to a tee!
Rolling Stone is publishing a piece of pure rubbish which states that 25% of new HIV infections come from bug-chasers. This is just plain silly & quite stupid.
Even if it were true, which I am sure it is not, there are no studies (that I am aware of at least) which actually break down the rate of bug chasing. So how could someone, the reporter for Rolling Stone, write such a thing. It might be interesting to see some studies which do look at this phenom. But so far there is nothing to look at.
Considering how many hundreds of gay men I know and have met it seems fair that I would know a few, 25%(?), who are part of that sub-culture. But I don't. I have conversed with a couple online a few years ago but for the most part they do not come across my radar very often at all. Of course it is entirely possible they are everywhere but for the sub cultures I interact with. But I doubt it.
Andrew Sullivan skewers the article here. Newsweek writes that sources used in the Rolling Stone piece are denying this.
HIV Stops With Me asks, "What would you do if you met a bug chaser?"
Bug chasers definately exist. There used to be a house here in LA called the LA Sex House (I see they are now selling videos of their exploits through Yahoo) which catered to folks chasing the bug, seeking gifts, barebacking, etc. I tried to interview the principal players at the house a few years ago but they refused. I wanted to attend one of their events to talk to those participating but since I would not play the barebacking game I guess I wasn't too welcome.
Here's a link to an online group of bug chasers.
Matt Butts writes about meeting his first bug chaser. Doug Hitzel writes, in March 2002, about being a bug chaser himself, and coming to regret it.
Maria Caloz searches Toronto for the Story Behind the Story. She finds, back in 2001, that while these people do exist as a subculture they are far more often discussed than actually encountered.
Daniel Hill has a great piece on being HIV+ and bug chasers from 2000 which I think should be a must read for anyone interested in sex, HIV, bug chasers, and the dynamics of this sub-culture.
Now I see others have been going through Google caches in search of this "very smart man" and completely "honorable Christian" man who seems to spend an awful lot of energy concerned about being considered one of those sinful "homosexuals."
I wonder?! Did she actually get the virus from a blood transfusion or is Jerry actually a member of BMMA?
As Mr. Sullivan writes, "I'm sorry, but if he's appointed, I can't see how any self-respecting advocate for public health can stay on the same board." Or for that matter how one could continue to support the pseudo-potus?
UPDATE Well what do you know. He's removed himself from consideration. That was fast!
The Recording Industry Association of America refused to comment on the prospect of learning anything from the pornography business, a stance that reflects the business' uneasiness with anything that would legitimize the concept of copyright infringements. One music official said privately that porn customers are seeking an immediate gratification that they'll pay for, whereas music consumers aren't quite so desperate for their fix.
It remains to be seen whether the RIAA can learn anything.
UPDATE The Year the Music Dies
She seemed to have sympathy and affection for everyone [previous 7 Presidents] but George W. Bush, a man who she said is rising on a wave of 9-11 fear - fear of looking unpatriotic, fear of asking questions, just fear. "We have," she said, "lost our way."
Thomas believes we have chosen to promote democracy with bombs instead of largess while Congress "defaults," Democrats cower and a president controls all three branches of government in the name of corporations and the religious right.
As she signed my program, I joked, "You sound worried."
"This is the worst president ever," she said. "He is the worst president in all of American history."
UPDATE Good to see other's have noticed this.
Damn but I'm gonna be so happy to see the Bush cavalcade go down in flames. These ignorant pups ought to be castrated! Manufacturing consent is immoral, did you forget the Soviet Union Mr. President? or do you just want to be the Soviet Union?
Bush Administration selects Jerry Thacker to serve on Presidential Advisory Commision on HIV and AIDS, a man who has characterized AIDS as the "gay plague".
His current web site has 'plague'. But in this cached version you can see the "gay plague."
This is him in the act of committing suicide while chatting on irc and on webcam.
This is everyone after he stopped chatting on irc, the webcam dies later.
Ask yourself, "What do I bring to the party" and make the answer "Everything." There is no such thing as a Boring Date. There's you spinnning gold out of nothing and there are a million better-looking, buff, stacked Rocket Scientists standing behind you. What's it gonna be, Popeye? What have you got to lose?
Okay, I'm back into my normal routine now that I have my laptop back. Much to do, much to do. Lots of stuff happened while I was away.
More in a bit...
Prediction: next year, 2004, there will be a sexblog category in the Bloggies. Who would win this year?
If you asked me, and you didn't, I would have to say it would either be daze or cowgirl.
has both a love for guns & a very large cock. Go figure! (and I've heard some say big guns are compensatory - silly rabbit!)
He's just bristling and arrogant in his "command" of the crisis, isn't he? His father must be so proud.
This morning I found one of our employees left an image of a man covered
with soap suds and a huge erection on my desk. They know I'm looking
for something like that! (explanation to follow soon.)
Tom Coates. This may sound really dumb and it might be one of those moments when everyone turns around to look at the weird bloke with the dodgy ideas, but I reckon a good proportion of 'premature ejaculation' is actually just men being quite happy about how long it takes them to sort themselves out being made to feel guilty by unsatisfied women... Almost never hear a man say "god what a bad orgasm"... [OriginalPost 12/17/2002]
Tom, my experience shows that there are a lot of men who consider premature ejaculation a problem. This is a concern I never hear from women. Interestingly enough women are usually more concerned with condoms being too small.
Yes all orgasms are good but some are better than others. My experience has shown that men who learn some degree of control tend to express a better appreciation of them. And consequently many men buy these new types of condoms.
Smith. I am with a guy he wants sex but i am frightened that i am going to fall pregenent with him i am not on the pill and have nerver had sex. He has planed a romantic holiday away for us in Feb dose it matter when i go on the pill or is a condom safe for us to use [OriginalPost 07/04/2002]
Everything you say here is concerned with what he wants. What do you want?
If you were to ask my advice, which I know you haven't, I would not sleep with the guy. If you are frightened of the situation then you are not ready to lose your virginity. Should you choose to lose your virginity in a situation without fear you will no doubt have a much better experience than one which brings up fear in you.
You must be on the pill for at least 3 months before it starts to give you full prophylactic protection. And the pill will do nothing whatsoever about sexually transmitted infections.
Unless you are marrying this fellow you shouldn't have sex with him unless you are both tested for STDs and have been fully educated in the risks you are taking.
If you are considering becoming sexually active you should definately approach your ob/gyn for a check up and access to professional advice.
Don't wait until it is too late. Do it now and don't let your boyfriend pressure you into making decisions before it is time. If he loves you he will want you to feel comfortable about all the decisions you make between the two of you.
Hope this helps.
The strong economy, with its promise of improved career opportunities for young people, and welfare reform, with its constraints on the receipt of public assistance, may affect these behaviors, since greater educational and employment opportunity are linked to lower teenage pregnancy rates and birthrates.
So are you saying that the converse is true? When the economy gets bad and subsistance gets more difficult teenage pregnancy rates and birthrates go up.
In the Court's eagerness to get rid of the first amendment claims in this case, it has created truly bad law that will cause problems for freedom of expression for many years to come. This is simply a disastrous opinion for free speech, and the Court should be ashamed of the shoddy job it's done in this case.
Or, Why Conservatives Have Left Liberals In the Dust
Some may find this of value. G. Lakoff breaks down the metaphors and
language of conservatives and liberals. And in the process makes note of
some metaphors which apply towards gay and bisexual men as they relate to
society and the family.
I found this to be fascinating and engrossing. I hope others find it as well.
This narrow list of uses doesn't even begin to cover it. I want one of these as my keyboard on my desktop.
I want to use a trackball of light. And I want the colors to be a nice soft blue instead of this bright red stuff. Very exciting as it could very well be a tremendous boon to ergonomics.
The group Freedom International had invited people to join them for a nude picnic in Treasury Gardens as part of their protest against the state's nudity laws, which mostly deem public nakedness to be offensive behavior.
Yet only organiser Tony Pitman and Andrew Sinclair rose to the challenge. They were later joined by a man called Al, clad in underwear, and a Rottweiler called Ziggy.
Sexuality is the root of procreation, the family and the rearing of children, and thus of the continued existence and well-being of society.
No it's not.
I've been thinking a lot about this myself. The use of both pro-choice & pro-life is very disingenuous. The choices inherent in abortion begin in the bedroom long before talk of abortion. Maxine does a good job of refocusing the issue away from the trash words and empty phrases. Bravo!
Chilean Porn Politician Promises to Flash Breasts. I want to be a porn politician.
This reminds me of the story of Lysistrata by way of women who refuse their men sex in order to stop a war. Of course, if this young politician has very nice breasts there may very well be a deluge of fighting in the Chilean capital along politicians of all stripes.
The plot is about as simple as it gets: Athenian women, fed up with the Peloponnesian War, barricade themselves in the Acropolis and go on a sex strike to force their husbands to vote for peace with Sparta.
Interestingly Aristophane's Congresswomen has the wives of congressmen take over the assembly to save Athens from corrupt politicians. I guess even then, 2,414 years ago, the politicians were as corrupt as today.
Wives of the Loo and Jekani tribes in Sudan have formed a similar pact. They number in the thousands, according to Pravda. Peter Jones writes, in reference to the professor who has organized these Sudanese women, Good luck to Mrs Ahmed, but to end the civil war in Sudan will require more than a comic sex-strike (which can hardly work anyway if the men are away all the time fighting a war). On the other hand, if she could gain control of Sudan's finances...
Surely he is correct. The folks involved in this war she's trying to stop are led by a man named Joseph Koney of the Lord's Resistance Army who is said to abduct children to be used as sex slaves. So if the men at war can not be swayed by the lack of sex from their wives they can apparently have sex with their children courtesy of Mr. Koney. I would hope that Mrs. Ahmed understands her effort is just one of many which must be deployed to bring men like Joseph to heel. The Lystrata Project is a worldwide reading of Aristophane's play. The event, to be held on March 3rd, 2003, is intended as a show of disagreement with a preemptive war, or so I understand. I would hope that such an event would involve nudity. Nudity is always nice with protest. Did I mention I want to be a porn politician?
someone presses the "I'm feeling lucky" button on Google and ends up on this page. I know I feel lucky. But I never seem to get lucky, go figure.
If you have ticks slap some Vaseline on 'em. They can't breathe and will pull out of your skin.

The theme that ran through the small group I facilitated is how worried people are about the future of this country -- both fear of terror reprisals and shame at the face we're putting to the world via this war.
There is going to be a demonstration in Washington DC against the administration's war. It is not in the best interest of my country to be pursuing this course. The country we are becoming, guided by vengence & in service to oil cartels and drug cartels is not the country that I think is the best country in the whole world. The United States will rot from the inside out if we continue this policy. The country's biggest exposed flank is not airport security. It is oil. The countries biggest exposed flank is not some vital piece of infrastructure or the world's tallest building or even the gruesome death of several thousand citizens. It is oil.
The ads are right. They are hyperbole and simplistic like other advertising but they are right on point. The dependence the United States, and all industrialized countries, have on the oil age will be our undoing. Good job Arianna!
As oil becomes more expensive to produce the oil cartel becomes more powerful. In some small part this war in Iraq will reintegrate Iraq into the world market. Particularly the oil market. Noone knows exactly "when" we have to transition beyond our dependence on oil but I think its fair and reasonable to say we have to at some point. Voluntary compliance or forced compliance it's all the same. The job of the President is to lead. I don't want my President to carry wars to other countries.
I think the majority of the country feels, in some manner, given the events of September 11th, that attacking the Taliban & Al-queda was just. But it strikes my gut, and almost everyone I know personally, that attacking Iraq is unjust. Many agree it was just to free Kuwuit, to maintain the structural integrity of Kuwiat and not allow Iraq to seize Kuwaiti oilfields. I am sure oil prices would have been greatly effected by Iraq taking the oilfields of Kuwait. It was certainly just when Saddam gassed the Kurds.
Dave Hyatt has a blog. Dave is a member of the team which just released the new Safari browser for Apple. Within what seemed like minutes Mark Pilgrim had assembled a review and pointers to others' comments. Dave, and Apple, are apparently interested in feedback. Very nice!
Jason Kottke has some very nice theoretical suggestions how the app can be further improved.
I also have a few suggestions. Mine however are of a more pragmatic nature:
Update - I have created a small stylesheet in order to test out my theory. Sure enough it does work. Now I wonder again if this will have unforeseen circumstances in interacting with the style sheets of external sites. Here's a test to see if I can (should be a no brainer) turn them back on locally: click here. - It worked!
Update - It turns out I am not the only one who doesn't tolerate underlined links well. This seems to be a no brainer. I hope this is fixed in the release version though. Or at least I hope there is a style sheet included in the install as the average user certainly doesn't know what a style sheet is much less how to build one.
In the time it has taken to read this column, 28 people have died of AIDS, including 5 children. An additional 49 people have become infected. It's imperative that we get over our squeamishness, accept that condoms are flawed but far better than nothing, recognize that condoms no more cause sex than umbrellas cause rain, and ensure that couples in places like Botswana get more than one condom per year.
has apparently become a standing policy in many doctor's offices. According to a small online poll released this week, only 49 percent of GLBT Americans surveyed have told their physicians about their sexual orientation.
A perspective on potential climate changes presented by Dr. Robert B. Gagosian, President and Director of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Very, very, good, read this! Great animations.
The time has come to re-define the street and what it means to come from the street. Yes, criminals & violence come from the streets, but so do men and women who live their lives with kindness, and within the realm of the law. The problem with making "street" or "realness" synonymous with criminality is that poor black children are demonized. You never see the image of middle class white children killing each other promoted as entertainment.
Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal properties of the drug, according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. The study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous healings.
I completely agree with Lessing's point. There is much prejudice towards the women, especially mothers, and against all men, especially fathers. Certainly it is not as bad as she describes in our schools but there is a pronounced proclivity in American culture to lean in the way she describes. One of my favorite books is "The Golden Notebook." It sounds like Lessing has quite a bit of character.
Mokhiber: I understand, that's why I'm raising the question. This gentleman was convicted of a felony, child molestation, and they're trying to strip him of five radio licenses. On the other hand, General Electric, which owns NBC, has been convicted of felonies, and they're not being stripped of their license. Why the double standard?
Ari Fleischer: I think you need to talk to the FCC about their standards. That's their jurisdiction to deal with licensing. Ron?
It will be the burden of the next generation to hold the today's conservatives to their record of homophobia, but it's only a matter of time until that happens.
"The condom is not a prescription for AIDS, neither is it meant to empower men alone. This is not about latex contact. The issue should be tackled in a sensitive manner."
Demonstrate the proper use of condoms by using this realistic model. Consists of an erect penis, condoms, syringe and artificial semen to simulate ejaculation. Mounted on a stand and delivered with carrying bag.
A provincial project aimed at punishing johns by making them clean up sex-trade debris has gone off the rails because local firefighters are refusing to help pick up the used needles and condoms.
While crews of johns in bright orange prison coveralls are set to comb city parks and streets for the items, they aren't allowed to actually touch them for safety and legal reasons. The plan was for firefighters to follow behind to do the collecting after the work crews marked the paraphernalia with small fluorescent flags, but many firefighters are refusing to take the assignment because they say it's insulting to their profession.
In a new study, researchers found that the longtime practice of performing a cesarean section in women who have active herpes infections does indeed reduce the risk that their newborns will be infected with the virus. The study also found that women who had been infected with herpes relatively recently were more likely to pass on the virus to their babies than women who had been infected for a longer time.

I am shaking with rage, at that big pussy Hank, at his dumb-ass mother, at his stepfather who smokes constantly and doesn't make a sound unless it's a coughing jag. And at myself. I'm gutless.

This is just great. Filchyboy is listed as a hair salon in Beverly Hills. Sssssshhh don't tell!
Hence the reason why the drug war will fall in my lifetime. I used to think it would fall in my child's time but I am becoming increasingly confident it will fall within my lifetime.

Health officials have dismissed claims by some men that they are not using condoms because they are too small.
They said there was no short condom as condoms were designed to fit all sizes.
More uneducated nonsense. Of course condoms come in different sizes. Yet another example of educators who know just as little about condoms as those who decry them. Very sad!
Lying in Ponds is an attempt to encourage vigorous, independent commentary in the American punditocracy by quantifying and analyzing partisanship. The presence of an excessive partisan bias transforms journalism into advertising, too distorted and unreliable to be useful in any serious political debate.
I suppose it all depends on what the definition of the word "negotiate" is.
Ever since George Washington warned his countrymen against foreign entanglements, empire abroad has been seen as the republic's permanent temptation and its potential nemesis. Yet what word but ''empire'' describes the awesome thing that America is becoming? It is the only nation that polices the world through five global military commands; maintains more than a million men and women at arms on four continents; deploys carrier battle groups on watch in every ocean; guarantees the survival of countries from Israel to South Korea; drives the wheels of global trade and commerce; and fills the hearts and minds of an entire planet with its dreams and desires.
A historian once remarked that Britain acquired its empire in ''a fit of absence of mind.'' If Americans have an empire, they have acquired it in a state of deep denial. But Sept. 11 was an awakening, a moment of reckoning with the extent of American power and the avenging hatreds it arouses. Americans may not have thought of the World Trade Center or the Pentagon as the symbolic headquarters of a world empire, but the men with the box cutters certainly did, and so do numberless millions who cheered their terrifying exercise in the propaganda of the deed.
Contrary to the woman at Fred Segal's, whose only visible skin was around her eyes, Lil Kim has it all figured out in the picture above from One World Magazine. She is cool and collected. Better to fight off that dry & suffocating feeling you get when wearing a full burka. But apparently some take issue with Lil Kim looking so cool and carefree in that updated burka for the modern woman. I wonder will there be a religious proclamation and boneheads all over the world will take off with their explosive laden shoes ready to take out Lil Kim so Allah will welcome them into heaven? Only time will tell.
I saw Matthew Broderick & Jack Lemon one night several years under the Marquee at the Mayfair filming a movie. But another Romanian gymnast, Lavinia Milosovici, said the gymnastic community should not be so critical of Ungureanu.

4. There will be an inevitable weblog backlash as big players show interest but get it wrong.
This is certainly down the pike. May be soon...
Speaking of which, I wonder if there is a pool of some sort to bet on the day the United States invades Iraq? It's pretty obvious ole 43 can't get his rocks off until such time as those virile young men in green are "in country."
Blogs as newsgroups
Usenet newsgroups were rendered worse than useless by wayward discussion and wall-to-wall spam. Now, according to some web theorists, blogs are bringing back the newsgroup idea, albeit by the backdoor. The idea is that, on blogs that let readers discuss links and find out where similar ideas are being discussed elsewhere on the web, we're seeing the rise of a kind of twenty first century Usenet - more focused, more responsive, more integrated into the rest of the online world.
The Navy's pedophilia scandal broke in the quiet and serene Oregon coastal town of Coos Bay on Sept. 11, 1982, when the commanding officer of the U.S. Naval Facility, a classified submarine tracking station, was arrested by local police for involvement in child pornography and lascivious acts with minors, including sodomy. The arrest followed a 2-month-long investigation involving the FBI and the Naval Investigative Service.
It is important to remember that you can live, socialise, work and play sport with someone who has HIV or AIDS, without being at risk. By learning more, families and friends can love, understand and accept - making all the difference to a person with HIV/AIDS.
In may 2001, Indian sex workers took out a huge May Day procession protesting against the Indian Census Commission decision to include them in the same category as beggars, vagabonds and street children in the national census.
One thing you will find in your life is that demagogues will constantly attempt to frame arguments in such a way that anyone who disagrees with them will be shut out of the argument because of the way that the terms of the argument are dictated.
For instance a man named Bruce Bartlett gave a speech a few days ago in which he attempted to lay out a list of songs by various pop music performers which fit into Mr. Bartlett's definitions of Conservative. To be sure his list of songs is a nice grouping of modern pop music. Among them probably my favorite is the song "Revolution 1" by the Beatles. I have always loved that song. Mr. Bartlett even goes so far to quote the following lines (which I have corrected from the mistakes in Mr. Bartlett's transcription):
Of course Mr. Bartlett doesn't come right out and say this in his speech. He says, as part of the set up for his disingenuous monologue, "I looked particularly for those embodying religious or patriotic themes, as these are unambiguously conservative values." By doing this he has set up a series of opposites in which values he espouses as conservative (patriotism, religion, pro-life, etc) stand in opposition to values he apparently does not espouse: liberalism (anti-patriotism, anti-religiosity, pro-choice, etc).
(It should be noted actually that this opposition Mr. Bartlett sets up may not be accurate as the duality of conservatism / liberalism is simply an empty signifier used by demagogues in political arguments. But for the sake of brevity I'm going to just swallow Mr. Bartlett's schema hook, line, & sinker.)
I know that you have studied a bit of American history so far. When you read this someday I have no doubt you will have extensively studied this topic and will have already realized the ludicrous position Mr. Bartlett has put himself in by declaring these lines from the Beatles to be conservative.
The United States was created as an act of revolution against a colonial power: England. If Mr. Bartlett's logic is to be trusted then surely it is true that the American revolution was an act of liberalism and if Mr. Bartlett's interpretation of the song in question is to be trusted the Beatles would surely be against the founding of the United States. (Of course the lads are English so who knows?)
Of course all of this is nonsense. The lyrics to the song "Revolution 1" are representative of neither conservatism or liberalism. They quite clearly stand in opposition to the tone and actions of destruction which permeated so much of political discourse in the 60's. When Mr. Bartlett expresses his surprise that Messers Lennon & McCartney would express themselves in such a fashion he shows himself to be completely devoid of any understanding of the Beatles oeuvre.
In reality patriotism is not the purvue of conservatism. Neither is opposition to abortion. Neither is having a religious life. All of this, Mr. Bartlett's best effort I am sure, amounts to a wholesale de-contextualizing of lyrics from a wide variety of musicians in order to further the ends of conservatism. This is dishonest and should be offensive to you.
Don't let a demagogue define the world for you into binary oppositions. Don't let a demagogue further their aims by defining the terms of an argument. If you can follow these simple rules your life will be richer. In fact, you will be able to see the rich nuances of lines in songs as works of artisanship and not partisanship and the world, and this great country of ours, can only be improved by that.

Today we went to visit the
Hispanic Heritage Museum. Of interest to this log is the inclusion
of some photos we found of the Baca family of Los Lunas. K, you
won't remember them now. You asked as we stood there looking at them
what your grandmother and grandfather look like. I couldn't tell
you. I can sometimes see them in my mind's eye. But it makes me
angry when I do.
So this family, the Bacas, are some of your forebears. Today they
are something like your second or third cousins. Apparently they are
the family behind the Bueno brand of chile here in New Mexico. Your
grandmother was a Baca. It is my belief that your grandfather
brought the incest into the family. It would be nice to know that
the Baca's are not like that. I hope someday you have the
opportunity to learn more about this branch of your family history.
One story I can share is that your grandmother V went to school
in a one room school house. I have seen pictures of her school from
so long ago. V and her classmates were not allowed to speak Spanish.
The teachers would beat them if they spoke Spanish instead of
English. When you tell me how bored you are by all of this history
and how much you disliked taking Spanish in school it makes me sad.
I so wish that they had not abandoned us so long ago. It would be
nice to know that you were a part of such a deep culture with such
stories of tragedy and triumph.
But as your grandfather W says, "Hispanics are like crabs - as
soon as one begins to crawl out of the bucket - the rest will pull
it back in." So I fear it will be up to us to discover these aspects
of your heritage on our own because your forebears have chosen not
to be involved in our lives.
Tonight we will stop by your aunt C's house to visit your
cousins. You asked for us to stop by and so we will.
I turned for one last time to see my father's head sticking out of the window like a newborn chick out of some great egg.

Star gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who was recently voted the top female athlete of the century, also criticized Ungureanu, saying "I don't think it was a very good idea. It damages the image of Romanian gymnastics.''
But another Romanian gymnast, Lavinia Milosovici, said the gymnastic community should not be so critical of Ungureanu.
Gymnastics is a celebration of the body. Nudity damages noone's image. Get over yourself.

Usenet newsgroups were rendered worse than useless by wayward discussion and wall-to-wall spam. "Hey, don't you think they should have noticed that press release urging people to have sex with barnyard animals by now?"
'Stealing Entertainment' it says on the intended RIAA site with a link to a page that says "Something went wrong..." Oh no!
Is this because RIAA can't even build a link or is because they link to a site like the Washington Times which can't even produce a simple web page? Hhhmmmmm.... (If the link doesn't load and you get the spastic error message just reload a few times and perhaps you'll be deemed worthy of actually reading about how to steal your very own entertainment.)
I have in the last couple of weeks I have turned my attention to various writers also exposed as customers of Salon.
First off was Hugh, who it turns out is local to me. When Rupaul is not writing Hugh's pieces are a good diversion. I like the catty edge and the quick wit. It appeals in some fashion. It turns out Hugh is an existing freelancer. We're going to have lunch sometime. I'm going to keep reading and see how it develops, this Standing Room Only.
Although I get paid for this I don't consider myself a freelancer. I can't imagine how to live that kind of life. I know Mike wants that life. I think his site will be deprecated as a result. I hope he keeps it up. I can really vibe with Mike. I want to say the same about my daughter, but I am very torn by writing such a thing. I think that is for K to say.
At some Abbeyfest perhaps we'll meet.

This completely describes a wet dream to me. As long as I've been writing in this space I have been constantly frustrated, and fascinated, with all the difficulties of simply writing on the web. The tools just keep getting better and better.
That is not quite right, a sect elder spelled out later. Indeed Yazidis suffered persecution, he said, such that one ruthless potentate who controlled the nearby splendid city of Mosul in the 13th century ordered an early Yazidi saint executed. The enthusiastic crowd then pelted the corpse with heads of lettuce. There have been sanctions against salad ever since, the elder intoned.
Palestinian children were outraged early yesterday morning to discover that a playground, formerly used by both Israeli and Palestinian children, had been occupied and sealed off by a band of Israeli youths. Claiming a right to the land that their forefathers had played on, Palestinians vowed that they would not rest or break for lunch until the playground had been returned.

Let me do right to all, and wrong no man.
The original fact sheet, created by the Clinton administration, stressed the importance of condoms to prevent HIV, but claimed that improper use was as much to blame as condom failure.
More nonsense I see. The original fact sheet came, I recall, before Clinton. It appears the reporter used "original" instead of "previous" in the sentence.
Most condom failure does come from improper use. Don't let them tell you otherwise. The whole issue fails to address the problems with condoms. People and their moral stances prevent the real issues from getting discussed in all aspects of society. No surprise it effects condoms as well. They have been a major source of contention as long ago as when housewifes made them by hand in their kitchens up to today where millions of dollars and the vector of an epidemic hang in the balance.

This is the natural result of USA Today's success. It took a few years but we are in the process of all corporate mass media news becoming like USA Today.
Longer think pieces are going to be moving to the web. Video bloggers will soon have long think pieces which rival the stuff put out on CNN and long form news product.
I would not be surprised if in the next 2-3 years we don't see at least one of those reporters involved in some kind of video blog project.
Brazil's new left-wing government has decided to suspend the purchase of 12 military jets so it can spend more on social programmes.
Not knowing anything about the politics of Brazil and being completely unwilling to jump on the left wing/right wing parade of nonsense I just have to "Bravo." If we had a lot more leaders of nations who concerned themselves with bread over guns the world would be a much better place.
I did the exact same thing. One Nation Under Dog! I started in first grade. In kindergarden we didn't recite the pledge. (That I recall) But in first grade we did and I would not say Under God. It still to this day appalls me that we should be expected to say such a disgusting and immoral thing.
Under the new law, effective Sept. 1, 2002, lap dances are legal, but dancers are specifically barred from touching or sitting on the customer's genital area.
I'm sorry but I missed that. How exactly is one to receive a lap dance without having someone sit on your lap? Maybe they should be called "Non-Invasive Pre-Lap Dances"?
These morality fucks really annoy me. (In which I use the word fuck to ensure my eventual arrest when the morality police finish their work on statues.)
I've never had a lap dance. Anyone care to volunteer or pony up for the expense?

Genetic testing is health insurance's iceberg.
I've said this for several years. Modern medicine, insurance, & our western liberal society are at a logical schism that will, in time, bring down the whole industry. The only way out that I see is something along the lines of what Mr. Brody discusses. Very, very cogent piece of writing there.
The Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, who has left his wife after a 17 year marriage has admitted a bisexual past.
My point is that men are not evolutionarily hard-wired to have many mates and women are not biologically "meant" to have just one. There are (or at least were) advantages to both in being faithful, and advantages and dangers to both in screwing around.
The men-get-to-sleep-around-and-women-stay-home thing isn't in the evolutionary makeup, it's just deeply embedded in the culture (and, mostly, in patrilineal cultures where it's key to know who the child's father is). I think that saying that women are good girls and men are dogs is a cop-out for both genders. It gives men an excuse to do a lot of unexamined sleeping around and women a way to pretend that they never have stray thoughts about sleeping with the entire tuckpointing crew that's working across the street. It's easier for men to just go on cruise control and not make the effort of being faithful (and vulnerable) to one person. It's easier for women to just coast along being Nice Girls and not dealing with the fact that temptations are very much there and look like a hell of a lot of fun. Watching several men rent hardcore video after hardcore video over the past year has solidified this position for me. The ones who rent four or five or six a day, the ones who call on New Porn Day and want to reserve the new ones and paw through the boxes and then can't wait for the next New Porn Day seem to be looking for something that mere variety can't give them. Maybe it's trite, but sometimes I can't help but wonder if slowing down and taking the time, risk and effort of dealing with one other human being for a bit could show them a glimpse of that thing. On the other hand, when women wrinkle their nose at tales of my workday, I sometimes wonder if pawing through the boxes until they found an image they liked might be just the thing they were looking for as well.
While I admire the poetic notions behind Rangel's suggestion about reinstating the draft I think it's a daft idea. As appealing as the "citizen" army is I think the professionalism of the current force is what is needed. I see no reason to change the military's structure, especially not to make a cogent but silly political point.
This is exactly why I so strongly disagree with the anti-gay regime in place. In a professional rule driven structure such as the military of today a "don't ask don't tell" regime change would be implemented as a matter of course. The small minority unable to follow the rules of employment would soon find themselves selected out of advancement programs and others better able to fllow the rules will seek those positions. The military wouldn't suffer at all. And it would be better off because it would have "all" hands on deck, as it were, because the pool of competitors for military jobs would include the absolute best of the volunteers instead of the best of the volunteers minus the faggots.
The position that "morale" is an issue related to homosexuality in the military is simply nonsense and derives from decision makers operating with the mind set of a draft military in which working situations are geared towards the low common denominator. Reinstating the draft would put the eventual sexuality neutral military off even further into the future.
On Friday night we saw The Two Towers, and when Legolas swung himself backwards onto that moving horse, I think I got pregnant.
Who wouldn't?
Look! It's porn superstars Kylie Ireland, Julie Meadows, Nikita Denise, Jenna Jameson and Midori! What a surprise!
On the door leading to the main square, Kashua's family had taped a black-on-white poster made to look like a death notice.
"As God, and you all, are our witnesses, we hereby cut off all ties (with Amal Kashua) for all eternity," it read. Kashua's brother endorsed the attack on the couple. "If I could, I would eat them both raw and spit them out," he told Israeli television, his face obscured and first name withheld.
There is something about poking through someone else's garbage that makes you feel dirty, and it's not just the stench and the flies. Scrap by scrap, we are reverse-engineering a grimy portrait of another human being, reconstituting an identity from his discards, probing into stuff that is absolutely, positively none of our damn business.
And yet the point is so well made.
More than twenty-three years ago, the 'regime of the oppressed' was supposed to bring the promised Paradise to Iran. The return of 'honor' had been promised to the group of fundamentalists that cried 'horror' for being 'dishonored' because their daughters- instead of staying at home- were commuting on the streets between school or work and home, without the black covering of the chador or veil, and with the clothing of their own choosing. To this end, the mullahs of the Mosque sermons and the bankrupt political fundamentalists proposed the thesis of "Rule of the Oppressed." Thus, the groundwork was laid for those who, despite having higher levels of academic training, due to their fundamentalist beliefs, had been shunned from the community of free-thinkers and from the political scenes to give their allegiance to the fundamentalist mullahs and control the destiny of a nation in their hands.
Circumstances had allowed this group to follow their own fundamentalist beliefs without having the slightest inkling what the wants and needs of the Iranian community were in those days: a community whose one and only desire was political freedom. In pursuing those fundamentalist ideologies the fundamentalist allegiance quickly mobilized and destroyed all the social, cultural, and economic freedoms that the Iranian nation had acquired throughout history: all taken away in the name of religion with deceitful lies.
The enemies of civilization made the women their first target and their enmity with women went so far that their incompetent governance managed to show their capabilities by policing the hair of six year old girls. The educated and fundamentalist- yet non- mullah- President appeared on TV and announced that women's hair should be covered, because rays from the women's hair will target the men! It is thus that by covering the hair of Iranian women, they first covered their own incompetence; unaware that after [23] years, the same six year old girls of those days have now risen to demand their lost rights despite all the propaganda that these unwise rulers have spread to justify their laws.
[The ruling fundamentalists should be told]: For [more than 23] years, you fundamentalists have stepped on the people's proverbial throat. You disregarded women's rights and with all your might you tried to keep half the nation out of society- to not hear their voices-unaware that these very ladies are nurturing this country's children. How could you have thought that by taking away people's rights you could create a strong society?
Unwise ones, do you remember when you would compare the Iranian girls and women to Fatemeh [the Prophet's daughter] and Zainab [Fatemeh's daughter], thus lying that you were giving her a high place? What happened? Why are you making them 'Chaste Houses' [, government controlled prostitution houses,] today? Are not these youth of today the small girls of yester-year that you praised so excessively? How is it that you have made drug addicts out of the children of these women? How is it that our countrywomen are being sold [literally] in neighboring countries? Till when are you to be the proverbial companion to the caravan and partner with the thieves?
You gave away our rights in the Caspian, was it not enough? You plundered our oil, was it not enough? You stole what rightfully belonged to the nation and turned your shacks to castles, was it not enough? Now, you are eyeing the Iranian women. You put the Iranian women on sale next to the islands of the The Greater Tonb, The Lesser Tonb, and Abu Musa and you debate the price with foreigners.
Your contemplations are dead wrong. Whatever you may have taken away from us during these years, you have not taken away our burning desire for freedom. Even those women who sell their bodies have sent their cries for freedom beyond the boundaries of your tyranny: They have said how they are forced to sell their bodies to feed themselves, to have a roof for their children to sleep under. They sell their bodies to stay alive, for there is no other way left. Stay alive so at the right opportunity they can reclaim the rights you have stolen from them: to avenge the addicting of their sons, the spilled blood of their husbands, and the compromised borders of the country. And the time is soon.
The pedestals of the proverbial throne of your injustice have been badly shaken by the same oppressed women. Open your eyes: we are the very same freedom-loving women who were pilots, attorneys, physicians, teachers, and mothers. The mothers of Sattar Khan and Bagher Khan, and the mothers of all the children of this land. It is we who next to our children will again destroy your castles of tyranny with our cries for justice and will take back the throne of power you have been sitting on through force and with lies.
We will destroy your courts of injustice and replace them with justice. We will build again our ravaged country and will replace today's indignities with our proud accomplishments; for, the hands of the Iranian women have rocked the cradle of freedom and have nourished freedom-lovers.
