Peace In The Valley

The theme that ran through the small group I facilitated is how worried people are about the future of this country -- both fear of terror reprisals and shame at the face we're putting to the world via this war.

There is going to be a demonstration in Washington DC against the administration's war. It is not in the best interest of my country to be pursuing this course. The country we are becoming, guided by vengence & in service to oil cartels and drug cartels is not the country that I think is the best country in the whole world. The United States will rot from the inside out if we continue this policy. The country's biggest exposed flank is not airport security. It is oil. The countries biggest exposed flank is not some vital piece of infrastructure or the world's tallest building or even the gruesome death of several thousand citizens. It is oil.

The ads are right. They are hyperbole and simplistic like other advertising but they are right on point. The dependence the United States, and all industrialized countries, have on the oil age will be our undoing. Good job Arianna!

As oil becomes more expensive to produce the oil cartel becomes more powerful. In some small part this war in Iraq will reintegrate Iraq into the world market. Particularly the oil market. Noone knows exactly "when" we have to transition beyond our dependence on oil but I think its fair and reasonable to say we have to at some point. Voluntary compliance or forced compliance it's all the same. The job of the President is to lead. I don't want my President to carry wars to other countries.

I think the majority of the country feels, in some manner, given the events of September 11th, that attacking the Taliban & Al-queda was just. But it strikes my gut, and almost everyone I know personally, that attacking Iraq is unjust. Many agree it was just to free Kuwuit, to maintain the structural integrity of Kuwiat and not allow Iraq to seize Kuwaiti oilfields. I am sure oil prices would have been greatly effected by Iraq taking the oilfields of Kuwait. It was certainly just when Saddam gassed the Kurds.

New Safari Browser from Apple

Dave Hyatt has a blog. Dave is a member of the team which just released the new Safari browser for Apple. Within what seemed like minutes Mark Pilgrim had assembled a review and pointers to others' comments. Dave, and Apple, are apparently interested in feedback. Very nice!

Jason Kottke has some very nice theoretical suggestions how the app can be further improved.

I also have a few suggestions. Mine however are of a more pragmatic nature:

1. Link underlines - I just cannot stand to have every single link on a page underlined. I am unable to find any preference which turns this off. I assume based on the ability to call style sheets from your preference file that you can create a stylesheet which turns this underlining behavior off but I am not so sure how such a style sheet would interact with the style sheet of other sites. If the web site author specifically wants to have them turned on I don't mind so much but given no positive decision in that direction from a web sites author I would prefer to have them turned off.

   Update - I have created a small stylesheet in order to test out my theory. Sure enough it does work. Now I wonder again if this will have unforeseen circumstances in interacting with the style sheets of external sites. Here's a test to see if I can (should be a no brainer) turn them back on locally: click here. - It worked!

   Update - It turns out I am not the only one who doesn't tolerate underlined links well. This seems to be a no brainer. I hope this is fixed in the release version though. Or at least I hope there is a style sheet included in the install as the average user certainly doesn't know what a style sheet is much less how to build one.

It is the only nation that polices the world through five global military commands; maintains more than a million men and women at arms on four continents; deploys carrier battle groups on watch in every ocean; guarantees the survival of countries from Israel to South Korea; drives the wheels of global trade and commerce; and fills the hearts and minds of an entire planet with its dreams and desires.

A historian once remarked that Britain acquired its empire in ''a fit of absence of mind.'' If Americans have an empire, they have acquired it in a state of deep denial. But Sept. 11 was an awakening, a moment of reckoning with the extent of American power and the avenging hatreds it arouses. Americans may not have thought of the World Trade Center or the Pentagon as the symbolic headquarters of a world empire, but the men with the box cutters certainly did, and so do numberless millions who cheered their terrifying exercise in the propaganda of the deed.

Yesterday as we walked along in the heat a "woman" got out of an expensive Mercedes and glided along the sidewalk towards us to Fred Segal on the corner. The kids were quick to point there fingers at the figure in hijab who flowed by us. Neither of the girls could understand why someone would dress like that, "Isn't she hot?" first one then both of the girls asked. In the Mercedes her children lolled about in their car seats and the bearded husband spilled ketchup on his shirt from his burger as he read the paper.

Contrary to the woman at Fred Segal's, whose only visible skin was around her eyes, Lil Kim has it all figured out in the picture above from One World Magazine. She is cool and collected. Better to fight off that dry & suffocating feeling you get when wearing a full burka. But apparently some take issue with Lil Kim looking so cool and carefree in that updated burka for the modern woman. I wonder will there be a religious proclamation and boneheads all over the world will take off with their explosive laden shoes ready to take out Lil Kim so Allah will welcome them into heaven? Only time will tell.

Conservative Pop Music? The Top 40 of the Top 40

One thing you will find in your life is that demagogues will constantly attempt to frame arguments in such a way that anyone who disagrees with them will be shut out of the argument because of the way that the terms of the argument are dictated.

For instance a man named Bruce Bartlett gave a speech a few days ago in which he attempted to lay out a list of songs by various pop music performers which fit into Mr. Bartlett's definitions of Conservative. To be sure his list of songs is a nice grouping of modern pop music. Among them probably my favorite is the song "Revolution 1" by the Beatles. I have always loved that song. Mr. Bartlett even goes so far to quote the following lines (which I have corrected from the mistakes in Mr. Bartlett's transcription):

We all want to change the world
When you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out

Now Mr. Bartlett claims that the song is "anti-revolution" and in paring this with conservatism he attempts to establish that his bogeyman liberalism is pro-revolution.

Of course Mr. Bartlett doesn't come right out and say this in his speech. He says, as part of the set up for his disingenuous monologue, "I looked particularly for those embodying religious or patriotic themes, as these are unambiguously conservative values." By doing this he has set up a series of opposites in which values he espouses as conservative (patriotism, religion, pro-life, etc) stand in opposition to values he apparently does not espouse: liberalism (anti-patriotism, anti-religiosity, pro-choice, etc).

(It should be noted actually that this opposition Mr. Bartlett sets up may not be accurate as the duality of conservatism / liberalism is simply an empty signifier used by demagogues in political arguments. But for the sake of brevity I'm going to just swallow Mr. Bartlett's schema hook, line, & sinker.)

I know that you have studied a bit of American history so far. When you read this someday I have no doubt you will have extensively studied this topic and will have already realized the ludicrous position Mr. Bartlett has put himself in by declaring these lines from the Beatles to be conservative.

The United States was created as an act of revolution against a colonial power: England. If Mr. Bartlett's logic is to be trusted then surely it is true that the American revolution was an act of liberalism and if Mr. Bartlett's interpretation of the song in question is to be trusted the Beatles would surely be against the founding of the United States. (Of course the lads are English so who knows?)

Of course all of this is nonsense. The lyrics to the song "Revolution 1" are representative of neither conservatism or liberalism. They quite clearly stand in opposition to the tone and actions of destruction which permeated so much of political discourse in the 60's. When Mr. Bartlett expresses his surprise that Messers Lennon & McCartney would express themselves in such a fashion he shows himself to be completely devoid of any understanding of the Beatles oeuvre.

In reality patriotism is not the purvue of conservatism. Neither is opposition to abortion. Neither is having a religious life. All of this, Mr. Bartlett's best effort I am sure, amounts to a wholesale de-contextualizing of lyrics from a wide variety of musicians in order to further the ends of conservatism. This is dishonest and should be offensive to you.

Don't let a demagogue define the world for you into binary oppositions. Don't let a demagogue further their aims by defining the terms of an argument. If you can follow these simple rules your life will be richer. In fact, you will be able to see the rich nuances of lines in songs as works of artisanship and not partisanship and the world, and this great country of ours, can only be improved by that.

A Visit to the Hispanic Heritage Museum

Today we went to visit the
Hispanic Heritage Museum. Of interest to this log is the inclusion
of some photos we found of the Baca family of Los Lunas. K, you
won't remember them now. You asked as we stood there looking at them
what your grandmother and grandfather look like. I couldn't tell
you. I can sometimes see them in my mind's eye. But it makes me
angry when I do.

So this family, the Bacas, are some of your forebears. Today they
are something like your second or third cousins. Apparently they are
the family behind the Bueno brand of chile here in New Mexico. Your
grandmother was a Baca. It is my belief that your grandfather
brought the incest into the family. It would be nice to know that
the Baca's are not like that. I hope someday you have the
opportunity to learn more about this branch of your family history.

One story I can share is that your grandmother V went to school
in a one room school house. I have seen pictures of her school from
so long ago. V and her classmates were not allowed to speak Spanish.
The teachers would beat them if they spoke Spanish instead of
English. When you tell me how bored you are by all of this history
and how much you disliked taking Spanish in school it makes me sad.
I so wish that they had not abandoned us so long ago. It would be
nice to know that you were a part of such a deep culture with such
stories of tragedy and triumph.

But as your grandfather W says, "Hispanics are like crabs - as
soon as one begins to crawl out of the bucket - the rest will pull
it back in." So I fear it will be up to us to discover these aspects
of your heritage on our own because your forebears have chosen not
to be involved in our lives.

Tonight we will stop by your aunt C's house to visit your
cousins. You asked for us to stop by and so we will.

One thing you will find in your life is that demagogues will constantly attempt to frame arguments in such a way that anyone who disagrees with them will be shut out of the argument because of the way that the terms of the argument are dictated.

For instance a man named Bruce Bartlett gave a speech a few days ago in which he attempted to lay out a list of songs by various pop music performers which fit into Mr. Bartlett's definitions of Conservative. To be sure his list of songs is a nice grouping of modern pop music. Among them probably my favorite is the song "Revolution 1" by the Beatles. I have always loved that song. Mr. Bartlett even goes so far to quote the following lines (which I have corrected from the mistakes in Mr. Bartlett's transcription):

We all want to change the world
When you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out

Now Mr. Bartlett claims that the song is "anti-revolution" and in paring this with conservatism he attempts to establish that his bogeyman liberalism is pro-revolution.

Of course Mr. Bartlett doesn't come right out and say this in his speech. He says, as part of the set up for his disingenuous monologue, "I looked particularly for those embodying religious or patriotic themes, as these are unambiguously conservative values." By doing this he has set up a series of opposites in which values he espouses as conservative (patriotism, religion, pro-life, etc) stand in opposition to values he apparently does not espouse: liberalism (anti-patriotism, anti-religiosity, pro-choice, etc).

(It should be noted actually that this opposition Mr. Bartlett sets up may not be accurate as the duality of conservatism / liberalism is simply an empty signifier used by demagogues in political arguments. But for the sake of brevity I'm going to just swallow Mr. Bartlett's schema hook, line, & sinker.)

I know that you have studied a bit of American history so far. When you read this someday I have no doubt you will have extensively studied this topic and will have already realized the ludicrous position Mr. Bartlett has put himself in by declaring these lines from the Beatles to be conservative.

The United States was created as an act of revolution against a colonial power: England. If Mr. Bartlett's logic is to be trusted then surely it is true that the American revolution was an act of liberalism and if Mr. Bartlett's interpretation of the song in question is to be trusted the Beatles would surely be against the founding of the United States. (Of course the lads are English so who knows?)

Of course all of this is nonsense. The lyrics to the song "Revolution 1" are representative of neither conservatism or liberalism. They quite clearly stand in opposition to the tone and actions of destruction which permeated so much of political discourse in the 60's. When Mr. Bartlett expresses his surprise that Messers Lennon & McCartney would express themselves in such a fashion he shows himself to be completely devoid of any understanding of the Beatles oeuvre.

In reality patriotism is not the purvue of conservatism. Neither is opposition to abortion. Neither is having a religious life. All of this, Mr. Bartlett's best effort I am sure, amounts to a wholesale de-contextualizing of lyrics from a wide variety of musicians in order to further the ends of conservatism. This is dishonest and should be offensive to you.

Don't let a demagogue define the world for you into binary oppositions. Don't let a demagogue further their aims by defining the terms of an argument. If you can follow these simple rules your life will be richer. In fact, you will be able to see the rich nuances of lines in songs as works of artisanship and not partisanship and the world, and this great country of ours, can only be improved by that.

A Visit to the Hispanic Heritage Museum

Today we went to visit the
Hispanic Heritage Museum. Of interest to this log is the inclusion
of some photos we found of the Baca family of Los Lunas. K, you
won't remember them now. You asked as we stood there looking at them
what your grandmother and grandfather look like. I couldn't tell
you. I can sometimes see them in my mind's eye. But it makes me
angry when I do.

So this family, the Bacas, are some of your forebears. Today they
are something like your second or third cousins. Apparently they are
the family behind the Bueno brand of chile here in New Mexico. Your
grandmother was a Baca. It is my belief that your grandfather
brought the incest into the family. It would be nice to know that
the Baca's are not like that. I hope someday you have the
opportunity to learn more about this branch of your family history.

One story I can share is that your grandmother V went to school
in a one room school house. I have seen pictures of her school from
so long ago. V and her classmates were not allowed to speak Spanish.
The teachers would beat them if they spoke Spanish instead of
English. When you tell me how bored you are by all of this history
and how much you disliked taking Spanish in school it makes me sad.
I so wish that they had not abandoned us so long ago. It would be
nice to know that you were a part of such a deep culture with such
stories of tragedy and triumph.

it back in." So I fear it will be up to us to discover these aspects
of your heritage on our own because your forebears have chosen not
to be involved in our lives.

First off was Hugh, who it turns out is local to me. When Rupaul is not writing Hugh's pieces are a good diversion. I like the catty edge and the quick wit. It appeals in some fashion. It turns out Hugh is an existing freelancer. We're going to have lunch sometime. I'm going to keep reading and see how it develops, this Standing Room Only.

Although I get paid for this I don't consider myself a freelancer. I can't imagine how to live that kind of life. I know Mike wants that life. I think his site will be deprecated as a result. I hope he keeps it up. I can really vibe with Mike. I want to say the same about my daughter, but I am very torn by writing such a thing. I think that is for K to say.

My point is that men are not evolutionarily hard-wired to have many mates and women are not biologically "meant" to have just one. There are (or at least were) advantages to both in being faithful, and advantages and dangers to both in screwing around.

The men-get-to-sleep-around-and-women-stay-home thing isn't in the evolutionary makeup, it's just deeply embedded in the culture (and, mostly, in patrilineal cultures where it's key to know who the child's father is).

I think that saying that women are good girls and men are dogs is a cop-out for both genders. It gives men an excuse to do a lot of unexamined sleeping around and women a way to pretend that they never have stray thoughts about sleeping with the entire tuckpointing crew that's working across the street. It's easier for men to just go on cruise control and not make the effort of being faithful (and vulnerable) to one person. It's easier for women to just coast along being Nice Girls and not dealing with the fact that temptations are very much there and look like a hell of a lot of fun.

Watching several men rent hardcore video after hardcore video over the past year has solidified this position for me. The ones who rent four or five or six a day, the ones who call on New Porn Day and want to reserve the new ones and paw through the boxes and then can't wait for the next New Porn Day seem to be looking for something that mere variety can't give them. Maybe it's trite, but sometimes I can't help but wonder if slowing down and taking the time, risk and effort of dealing with one other human being for a bit could show them a glimpse of that thing.

Homosexuality, Rangel, & the Military

While I admire the poetic notions behind Rangel's suggestion about reinstating the draft I think it's a daft idea. As appealing as the "citizen" army is I think the professionalism of the current force is what is needed. I see no reason to change the military's structure, especially not to make a cogent but silly political point.

This is exactly why I so strongly disagree with the anti-gay regime in place. In a professional rule driven structure such as the military of today a "don't ask don't tell" regime change would be implemented as a matter of course. The small minority unable to follow the rules of employment would soon find themselves selected out of advancement programs and others better able to fllow the rules will seek those positions. The military wouldn't suffer at all. And it would be better off because it would have "all" hands on deck, as it were, because the pool of competitors for military jobs would include the absolute best of the volunteers instead of the best of the volunteers minus the faggots.

The position that "morale" is an issue related to homosexuality in the military is simply nonsense and derives from decision makers operating with the mind set of a draft military in which working situations are geared towards the low common denominator. Reinstating the draft would put the eventual sexuality neutral military off even further into the future.
