Howard Dean On the Bush Doctrine
Presidential candidate Howard Dean gave a talk at Harvard last night. He asked an interesting question. Next year, how will we feel when China invades Taiwan because they think they have weapons of mass destruction? Has the new Bush Doctrine, pre-emptive wars, unleashed a philosophy of world power that we may not be so comfortable with?

Why? The Weirding Way
is a meditation of sorts I wrote on fascism, ecology, the first gulf war, and American politics. It was published in the Spring 1991 edition of Ones & Zeroes.
(At some point I'll begin re-publishing much of this Ones & Zeroes content. I was given permission to reprint this stuff a couple of years ago but have never had the chance.
Given the current war in Iraq I thought it prudent to dig out the piece and see if it had anything to offer. My perpsectives have grown quite a bit in the intervening years. I'm going to spend the next few hours/days editing, linking, and formatting the piece.
After that if I find it of value I may set out to write part two.
We'll see. In the mean time check it out and comment on any additional resources or links which may be applicable to it.

75,000,000 Toddlers Can't Be Wrong
Several years ago I was in NYC at our store in the village and Steve walked up. I got so excited because at that time Blue's Clues was such an important piece of the media landscape in our home. It was all I could do not to run up to the guy and fawn all over him and ask for his autograph. Needless to say when I got home after my trip K was beside herself with excitement and immediately wanted me to introduce her to Steve. She was only 3 or 4 at the time so she didn't understand completely that he wasn't just outside the door waiting to meet her.
The Minister of Culture
is on CNN making a speech. He gets to a part about something which happened between Iraq and the United States in 1988. CNN cuts away.
I don't know whether this was an intentional cut away because the culture minister is about to say something that is embarrassing to the United States or if it was just time for the anchor Aaron Brown to get more face time. Either way it was a very stupid move on CNN's part. If prinicipals involved in a war are giving live speeches to the world I would think a news organization would have an obligation to carry it.
In any event what was the culture minister talking about?

The French, Russia, Germany, & War Crimes
Considering that these countries have done everything possible for several years to stop Saddam Hussein from being tried by the international war crimes courts I have to wonder why it is that Bush even went to the security council in the first place, or rather, how come he did not make this very clear. It seems as if he could have forced the international war crime court issue and gotten lots of play or even an entrance to a widely supported war if he had done so.

The Value of a Citizen
So if I am crippled, living on section 8 and public support, and I need assistance to wipe my ass I have a low quality of live and therefore my life is worth about a nickel.
If on the other hand I am young, in good shape, am gainfully employed, and a person in good standing in my local evangelical church I have a very high quality of life so my life is worth about 7.8 million dollars.
That sounds about right.

junior high school in Jacksonville, Arkansas is persecuting a 14-year-
old kid because he's gay. According to the ACLU, among the youth's
punishments for being a homo? "School officials preached their
religious views on homosexuality and forced him to read aloud from the
Bible in clear violation of the establishment clause of the First
Amendment. This was done as punishment after McLaughlin, who is himself
a Christian, disagreed with a teacher for calling him 'abnormal' and
'unnatural.'"
This kid needs to sue their bigoted asses off. In the meantime, you can

Abortion: Back in the Spotlight
To the Editor:
"Senate G.O.P. Holds Firm as Vote on Abortion Nears" (news article, March 13) notes that as part of the debate over so-called partial-birth abortion, the Senate voted on a nonbinding resolution reaffirming that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and that it should not be overturned. The resolution was endorsed in a 52-to-46 vote.
Not discussed was one of the most interesting nuances of the larger abortion debate going on in Congress. If only the women in the Senate had voted, the resolution would have passed 13 to 1. Ninety-three percent of the women in the Senate voted to uphold the law of the land, including the support of four Republicans.
The message from this debate is simple: when women hold office, overwhelmingly choice is protected. This is a message that pro-choice voters should keep in mind as we gear up for the next election.

What Is the War Powers Act?
The suit, brought by several members of Congress and a few "active-duty" members of our armed forces, sought an order from the courts preventing the White House and Pentagon from starting a war with Iraq. The Nine Billion Links of God
According to the Phoenix New Times, the state of Arizona has been allowing a "feudal" colony of fundamentalist Mormons to force underage girls into illegal polygamous marriages for decades.
Aside from being an excellent title for a blog this is a good catch. When I heard this morning on NPR that Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped by a polygamist "preacher" I immediately realized she has probably been raped by this man and his wife. I suspect this case is going to open up several polygamist communities to outside scrutiny. Poor girl.

Matthew Bailey-Dick, 30, from Waterloo ON, was denied entry into the USA early on March 7, 2003, after U.S. immigration officials at Port Huron MI found literature from Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) in the trunk of
his rental car. The immigration officers claimed that the CPT newsletters,
printed in Chicago IL, were "anti-American." They also raised concerns
about a sticker on Bailey-Dick's guitar case that read, "Question authority."
Bailey-Dick is currently studying at Associated Mennonite Biblical
Seminaries in Goshen, IN. He had been in Waterloo, ON, speaking at the
church he had pastored for the previous two years--Waterloo Kitchener
United
Mennonite Church--about his participation in the recent CPT delegation
to
Iraq.
Bailey-Dick was carrying a J-1 student visa, valid until the end of
August
2003. U.S. immigration officers confiscated the visa, insisting that he needed a new type of visa document. They then finger-printed and
photographed him. Later that day, an immigration supervisor told
Bailey-Dick
that his student visa was valid, but that he was still denied entry into
the
USA. The supervisor said that Bailey-Dick needed to go to Detroit for an interview with an even higher-echelon U.S. immigration official.
When he arrived at the Detroit border crossing on March 8, Bailey-Dick
was
questioned for an hour by FBI agent Tom Morisi and immigration officer
John
Owen about the work of Christian Peacemaker Teams and the CPT delegation
to
Iraq. They then informed him that his student visa would be reissued.
At the end of the questioning, Owen cautioned Bailey-Dick, "Don't bring
any
of that literature across the border any more. It's one thing for an
American citizen to distribute such literature. It's quite a different
thing
for a foreign national to come into the USA and promote such ideas."

Moving the Dead for Cheap Political Gain
Frustrated by France's refusal to support a war with Iraq, U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite proposes bringing the remains of American veterans buried in France back to the United States.
If the country that U.S. troops helped liberate during World War II won't support American military plans, then Brown-Waite proposes bringing the remains of those troops home for the families that request it.
"France has consistently turned its back on the United States," said Brown-Waite, R- Brooksville. "They forget if it weren't for America, they would be speaking German today."
More than 74,000 U.S. servicemen and women from World War I and World War II are buried in American cemeteries in France and Belgium, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission.
If I had someone buried over there, I don't as all my family in WWII came home afterwards, I would be royally offended by this suggestion. As it is, I am royally offended by this suggestion.

A Fractured Penis
A man was admitted to the emergency department at 1 am in obvious distress. He was agitated, his skin cold and clammy, suggestive of blood loss.

GCHQ Arrest Over Observer Spying Report

It's unfortunately like babysitting someone else's horribly spoiled brat. I cannot discipline and direct them as I see fit and I can only wait until they leave my care. They cannot leave soon enough, before they break something else of value. Put away anything precious and any sharp objects as best as you can in the mean time.

In an interesting example of false information being passed around as truth Google has 19 results which all claim that there are a total of four recorded lithopaedions in history. From what I see there are five. There are five recorded lithopaedions in history.
I'm willing to bet there is someone who studies lithopaedions. This person could no doubt tell stories of stone babies in literature, mythology, medical lore. But I don't know anything except there are five on the net. Who studies lithopaedions?

I'm an advocate of that policy, I helped put that policy in place and I'm accused, therefore, of supporting homophobia.
But I think it's a different matter with respect to the military because you're essentially told who you're going to live with, who you're going to sleep next to, and it's a different set of circumstances in a military environment.
Out of a military environment, in a school, I think any act that suggests someone should be discriminated against or in some way stigmatized because of their racial background, ethnic background or sexual preference is not appropriate.
Here in the State Department, sexual preference makes no difference; we have gay ambassadors and employees throughout the Department. I don't know who they are and it's none of my business, as long as they do their jobs.
And that doesn't apply to gay folks because they might be sleeping next to someone? Has this guy left his brain at the security council? Calling all delegates, has anyone mistakenly picked up the Secretary of States brain? Please bring it to the front desk and no questions will be asked.

Frank Lafayette Bird Jr., 61, of the 2300 block of Callie Street, was arrested after driving a delivery van into the front entrance of the clinic on Fannin.
Bird, a well-known Houston abortion protester who served a one-year federal prison term for attacking a doctor outside another Houston clinic in December 1994, told a deputy constable the crash was deliberate, to "stop the killing."
And here's an excerpt from this moron's court case:
On December 13, 1994, appellant Frank Bird (Bird), while protesting outside the America's Women Clinic in Houston, Texas, threw a bottle at a car driven by Dr. Theodore Herring (Herring), an abortion provider, as he attempted to enter the clinic premises. Toya - babygirl's got all the right weaponry
Yesterday I saw a guy overdose on heroin...that was not nice at all. He had been dragged out of the bar next to my work and was outside completely fucked up and unconscious, the paramedics were trying to resuscitate him by giving him oxygen, pumping on his chest, and yelling at him to open his eyes. A crowd of people milled around and just watched, as soon as he was put into the ambulance and the cops dispersed, everyone just walked away and carried on with their day. Human beings are so strange, it's just odd how we all rubber-neck as soon as we see a "broken" person, it interests people to see others in that state, they just stand around and watch as somebody nearly dies, then wonder off to do their groceries or whatever. This post is getting so long and random now...

They say that they love the American people but hate our government. They don't understand the US. Read the Constitution. Check out the first three words. It's our government. You can't like us and not like our government, and vice versa.
The problem with this is that it is not our government. The United States is in a state of Constitutional breach and until we have a legally elected President we will continue to be so.
This is why the above comments are so wrong. It does not say in the Constitution that the Supreme Court decides issues related to an election. The Constitution has a well described method for dealing with election snafus. These methods were ignored by the court and all involved. The end result is that we do no have a government. This is why it is so important to overturn this pseudo-potus from his pretend throne. I heard on NPR this morning interviews with Iraqi children who want us to liberate the country. I am all for liberating Iraq but by doing so we strengthen the hand of George Bush. The man should be tried for treason not empowered to wage war.

Jane Galt Does PETA
I'm not one complain about meat eaters. In fact I am one. Sure I have been a vegetarian, on more than one ocassion, and sure it is nice to do a change up in your menu sometimes, I mean you can only eat Frito-pie so many days in a row before some corn on the cob starts calling your name. But to be honest I have never been a fan of PETA because, well what they do seems so completely uninteresting to me. It's not that I don't agree with PETA's goals. I mean who can argue with less cruelty as an objective. But when push comes to shove the logical conclusion of PETA's position is that we all become vegetarian, you'll remember at this point that I am not a vegetarian currently, and that is simply not something I am willing to abide by. I love my roast beast! Yumm!
So I am inclined to give PETA the benefit of the doubt. Well I should say I was. You see I have a story which resulted in turning me against PETA. More on that in a moment.
Now contrary to some of Jane's readers I don't give a rats ass about being vindictive towards PETA. I'm not going to join in any International Eat An Animal for PETA campaign. There are about 3,789,908 things which come first in line for me when it comes to campaigns I'll spend time and or money and or energy on and throwing a fit about PETA is certainly not one of them. In my world view some fools should just be ignored. Since PETA is not about to take over the world, and incidently seems to genuinely have good intentions, they fall into the category of ignore at every opportunity. If I truly wanted to spread my resources and energy towards a group which tackles problems of animal cruelty I'd have to pick ASPCA.
So to the story then it happens that once I was in NYC at a dear friends. We were celebrating a birthday for his dad. His dad, it so happens, was a scientist at Dow. He related to me the following. Somewhere in Dow, at the behest of some experiment, there were several hundred monkeys which were being slowly poisoned in the search for a cure to some terrible disease.
It was a bad situation for the monkeys and the people involved. The saving grace of this was that the experiments would result in saving lives, both in monkeys and humans. Not many months before the experiment was to end PETA rescued the monkeys.
Now apparently, and this is where the story gets interesting to me, this experiment was going to be done whether these particular monkeys were rescued or not. When the enormous loss of this experiment took place plans were immediately made to do the several year experiment again in Japan. So PETA rescued some monkeys and more died.
I find this to be very troublesome. Surely the logical conclusion of an organizations actions should be thought out at least as far as what happens to the next set of monkeys?

Also, he wrote, "conservationist" conveys a "moderate, reasoned, common sense position" while "environmentalist" has the "connotation of extremism."
President Bush's speeches on the environment show that the terms "global warming" and "environmentalist" had largely disappeared by late last summer. The terms appeared in a number of President Bush's speeches in 2001, but now the White House fairly consistently uses "climate change" and "conservationist."

At this rate I'll have 2.6 million visitors this year. Pretty amazing considering I am just one guy with a computer and a bit of skills.

Mandela On The AIDS Epidemic
