In the Court's eagerness to get rid of the first amendment claims in this case, it has created truly bad law that will cause problems for freedom of expression for many years to come. This is simply a disastrous opinion for free speech, and the Court should be ashamed of the shoddy job it's done in this case.

"The Internet's 'triple-A' -- access, affordability and anonymity -- is particularly attractive to women," said Cooper, who is the editor of Sex and the Internet: A Guidebook for Clinicians. "Women are supposedly equal today, but in terms of sexuality, they're not -- in their everyday lives they're more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault and potential damage to their reputations."

Yesterday the Justice Department filed its Notice of Appeal to the US Supreme Court of the injunction issued by the Philadephia trial court on the CIPA case. Here's an article from Wired covering this new development. No surprise they did this of course.

NY Times: Battle Over Access to Online Books. Now, new technologies are igniting a similar battle closer to home. Librarians have seized on the potential of digital technology and offered users free online access to the contents of books from their homes, and they are squaring off with publishers who fear that free remote access costs them book sales. [Tomalak's Realm]

This type of development coupled with government coercion like CIPA will get us in the not too distant future a dearth of trust based information on sex and sexuality over the internet. One of my plans for future versions of this site is a way to search local card catalogs for books The Safer Sex Page recommends. I figure if in a future version I allow the user to sign in then I should be able to make calls to various card catalogs based on zip code. It would be pretty nifty I think to have a reference to an article and then be able to check it out or check on its local status. If this was linked deeply enough in conjuction with a commerce engine like Amazon it would make a great platform for research about safer sex issues.

Unfinished Business

"Joel, do I need to start taking care of unfinished business and telling people that I love them and I'm sorry for all the evil things I've done?"

No, the Rapture's not coming, so feel free to continue to be lazy and inconsiderate towards others.
